Ready to make a film in just 72 hours?
The Sign on Screen 72 Hour Film Challenge invites Deaf and hard of hearing filmmakers to come together, collaborate, and create an original short film inspired by a mystery theme, revealed at the very start of the challenge.
Working in teams of 3–6, you’ll have one weekend to write, shoot, edit, and submit a 3–5 minute film. Any genre is welcome — the only limits are time and creativity.
To take part, teams must include at least three Deaf or hard of hearing creatives in key roles, such as director, producer, or cinematographer. All films must be suitable for a general audience (PG or lower), and while you’re welcome to plan ahead, all filming and editing must take place within the 72-hour challenge period. Your final film must also feature the mystery theme.
The challenge kicks off on Friday 1 May at 6pm (AEST), when the theme is revealed, and runs through to Monday 4 May at 6pm (AEST).
One selected film will be showcased at the Opening Night of the Sign on Screen Film Festival, on Friday 22 May at the National Film and Sound Archive in Canberra, while a selection of other films will screen on a continuous loop throughout the festival. A cash prize will be awarded to the winning film.
Please note: the judging panel reserves the right to withhold the award if, in their view, no submission meets the required standard.
